New Mountaineer Orientation

Overview

Led by the Learning and Organizational Development (LOD) team, New Mountaineer Orientation provides new employees with a solid foundation as they begin their career as a Mountaineer.

New employees will learn about our identity as West Virginia’s flagship, land-grant, R1 university and the mission that drives our work. We’ll share information on the University’s Strategic Compass and our values, allowing them to take a deeper look into our culture. And we’ll provide information and helpful campus resources so new employees feel connected throughout their WVU journey.

Most importantly, NMO is an opportunity to build connection to our University. The orientation session will show employees how every role supports the University every day.

Our goal is for every new employee to leave their orientation session with a better understanding of their new employer, a connection to our mission and all that we do, and a stronger sense of pride in being a Mountaineer.

Eligibility

  • Eligible: WVU employees who work on the Morgantown campus with an “Onsite” or “Hybrid” work arrangement attend NMO. This includes classified and non-classified staff, faculty, and FE/AP employees.
  • Excluded: Adjunct faculty, contingent employees, contingent/temporary/seasonal employees, student employees/graduate assistants, medical residents, and post-doctoral employees do not attend NMO.

How to Attend

  • Employees who begin work on or after Sept. 1, 2026, will attend the NMO session held the month following their first day at WVU.
    • For example, employees who begin in September will attend the October session, and employees who begin in October will attend the November session.
  • Following the first session on Oct. 12 for employees who begin in September, NMO sessions will be held the first Monday of each month on the Downtown area of our Morgantown campus.
  • New employees will receive more information on their specific session via email as they begin their roles.

Before Attending

  • Ahead of NMO, new employees receive access to a digital, self-paced resource called the New Employee Journey.
    • This online resource will provide many of your “first day” resources, including information on benefits, parking, WVU systems, ID cards, and more.
  • The New Employee Journey focuses on logistics and things new employees need to do while NMO sets the foundation for our University culture. Both elements are designed to complement each other and provide all the information a new employee needs.
