Medical Management

The Medical Management Unit administers and coordinates WVU medical leave programs. This unit was established to protect the confidentiality of employee’s medical information. All required medical documentation should be provided directly to and housed in Medical Management.

For individuals employed by both West Virginia University (WVU) and University Health Associates (UHA): As part of the WVU medical management or other leave request process, all information submitted by the employee may be shared with and between WVU and UHA. The employee also acknowledges that he/she has consented to the use or disclosure by WVU and UHA of information provided.

The Unit also serves as a starting point in the filing of Short- and Long-Term Disability claims, although these insurance plans are managed by WVU Employee Benefits. All required medical documentation related to Short and Long-Term Disability claims should be provided directly to and housed in the Medical Management Unit where confidentiality will be protected and maintained.

medical leave options

Explore the different types of medical leave offered at WVU.

Catastrophic Leave

Eligible employees who are approved for medical leave and exhaust their own leave options have the opportunity to apply for leave donations.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

FMLA is designed to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by allowing reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons.

Medical Leave

An employee absent from work due to medical reasons for more than five consecutive days must provide a Medical Verification Form to determine if they meet requirements for authorized medical leave.

Modified Return to Work

If an employee is unable to perform their full job duties upon returning to work from a medical leave, they may be considered for the Modified Return to Work Program.

Parental Leave

Parental Leave may be used for the birth of a child, placement of a child for adoption, or to provide care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition.

Workers' Compensation

WVU employees who sustain job related injuries may be covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance for wage and/or health care needs.

Americans with Disabilities Act

WVU offers reasonable accommodations for all employees.

DOT Drug and alcohol testing

Some employees at WVU may be required to have drug and alcohol testing.

WVU complies with the US Department of Transportation requirements relative to drug and alcohol testing for safety sensitive personnel. Under the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration, a covered employee is any employee who operates a commercial motor vehicle and performs safety-sensitive functions.
