Reduce Work Hours or Effort

Interested in working fewer days per week on a temporary or permanent basis? Consider expressing interest in reducing your work hours or effort while still remaining an active member of the WVU family.

Eligibility

The program is open to staff (both benefits-eligible and non-benefits-eligible) and faculty employed by WVU or WVU Research Corp. as of April 1, 2023.

Note: The Work-Time Reduction Program is not open to WVU State employees who participate in the State Teachers Retirement System.

Examples of Reduced Work Hours or Effort

If your position is a regular, full-time status, you may wish to check with your supervisor or HR Partner to understand your exact full-time equivalency (FTE) number. This number indicates the portion or percentage of full-time hours that describes an employee’s assigned work schedule.

For example, an employee assigned to work full-time at 37.5 hours a week has an FTE of 100% or 1.0.

1.0 FTE = 100% = 37.5 hour per week
0.80 FTE = 80% = 30 hour per week
0.53 FTE = 53% = 20 hour per week (This is the minimum you can work to remain benefits-eligible)

Impact to Pay and Benefits

Your pay and some benefits will be reduced on a pro-rated basis during this time. You will continue to be paid, but you will see a lower amount on your paycheck during the period that you reduce your hours.

If you are an hourly, non-exempt employee, your hourly pay rate remains the same even if you reduce your hours. If you are a salaried, exempt employee, you will see your salary reduced on a pro-rated basis. For more information, view the benefit impacts of position changes.
