Coaching and Counseling
At WVU, performance management is a continuous active partnership between people leaders and their employees to enable employees to be fully engaged, enhance effectiveness, and reach their full potential through ongoing meaningful feedback and coaching conversations beyond the annual performance review to achieve WVU mission and goals.
Coaching for Success
A key part of leading people and managing performance is coaching for success - defined as providing resources and feedback so employees can develop. This step is frequent, ongoing, and unique to each employee, leader, team, and department.
Strategic HR Partners are positioned to support leaders in all areas of employee development, including sourcing and/or creating resources to support employee needs and growth, as well as opportunities to give and receive feedback. Reach out to your assigned SHRP for support in coaching for success.
Counseling
Remember that everyone – no matter their role or level – has areas that need to be developed. Counseling consists of objectively identifying areas of deficiency and providing feedback for improvement. This is not about making a statement on an employee’s overall capabilities, work-ethic, or who they are as a person, it's simply an opportunity for growth.
Employee Relations Specialists are positioned to support leaders in navigating counseling if an employee is struggling to meet expectations, under-performing, or when other concerns arise. In these cases, you should share learning feedback immediately, as well as have regular discussions on how the employee can grow and improve. Reach out to your assigned ER Specialist for support in counseling.
