2023 Performance Review

2023 Performance Review Process Information:

In support of West Virginia University’s continued focus on recognizing and rewarding high performance across our institution, the 2023 performance review process will launch on Friday, March 1, for classified and non-classified staff and certain FE/AP employees. 

Aligned to WVU’s core values, the annual performance review process is designed to measure an employee’s capabilities, accomplishments, development and overall contributions to the University as well as the critical role each employee plays in bringing our land-grant mission to life.

To provide more timely feedback to employees, the timeline for the performance review process has been condensed. While it has historically taken place from mid-January through the end of April, the process will now be conducted from March 1 through May 8. This new timeline will allow employees to receive more real-time comments on their performance.

In addition, the second-level supervisor review and approval step has been removed in the Blue system. We encourage second-level leaders to work on their team rating plans with their direct reports who serve as supervisors and managers.

Below are important points of the process:

  • On March 1, 2024, eligible employees will receive an email to their WVU email account announcing that it is time to begin the pre-review process. This email will contain a link to the pre-review in the electronic system. 
  • The pre-review is optional but strongly encouraged.
  • Employees will have until March 15, 2024, to complete the pre-review and submit it electronically to their supervisor.
  • On March 18, 2024, supervisors will receive an email to their WVU email account with a link to access employee reviews in the electronic system. 
  • Employees hired prior to July 1, 2023, will be eligible for a performance review.
  • The 2023 performance review period will cover Jan. 1, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023.
  • As part of this year’s process, WVU Research Corp. employees will use the standard Research Corp. performance management system for completing their reviews.

Below is the timeline of the overall process:

  • March 1, 2024 – Employees pre-review opens.
  • March 15, 2024 – Employee pre-review closes. 
  • March 18, 2024 – April 1, 2024 – Reviews are open for first-level and second-level supervisors to condense the cycle process.
  • April 1, 2024 – The review tool will close to all first and second-level supervisors. All reviews must be completed by this date.
  • April 3, 2024 – Analytic reports are provided to vice president/dean levels for review and approval and/or modifications.
  • April 12, 2024 – Vice presidents/deans complete their review process and authorize the final ratings.
  • April 22, 2024 – May 8, 2024 – Supervisors can conduct employee review meetings. Employees will be given 10 business days to review their performance review and provide comments. The 10 business-day comment period will begin after the employee has received either the email with the link to the comments page or accessed the comment page on their performance review dashboard.
  • All reviews are considered final 15 business days after the employee has received the performance review from their supervisor.

All newly hired (after July 1, 2023) classified and non-classified staff who are still in their probationary period should use the current form and process. Contact for the appropriate review forms.
