Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity

West Virginia University (WVU) offers benefits-eligible employees options for critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance. These plans are designed to protect an employee's finances with cash benefits to help pay for unexpected expenses like loss of income, deductibles and child care.

Critical Illness Insurance
Provider: Sun Life
  • Coverage Options: Employee, Spouse and Child.
  • Benefits payable for certain conditions such as: core conditions, cancer conditions, childhood conditions, and other conditions like blindness..
  • Premiums:  Premiums for employee or spouse coverage are based on employee's age and coverage amount selected. Child benefit is based only on coverage amount selected. All premiums are payroll deducted.
  • Enrollment: Employees may enroll the month of hire or during the two following months or during the annual open enrollment period.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance
Provider: Sun Life
  • Coverage Options: Employee only, Employee + Spouse, Employee + Child(ren) or Family.
  • Benefits payable for hospital stays due to: sickness, accidents, routine pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, newborn complications, mental and nervous disorders and substance abuse.
  • Premiums: Premiums are based on coverage option selected and are payroll deducted.
  • Enrollment: Employees may enroll the month of hire or during the two following months or during the annual open enrollment period.
