Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity

West Virginia University (WVU) offers benefits-eligible employees options for critical illness and hospital indemnity insurances. These plans are designed to protect an employee's finances with cash benefits to help pay for unexpected expenses like loss of income, deductibles and child care.

Critical Illness Insurance

Carrier: Sun Life

  • Plan Year: July 1 - June 30
  • Coverage Options:  Three coverage options are available, and you can enroll in all three. 
    • Employee - Coverage is only purchased for the employee.
    • Spouse - If the employee has coverage for themself, they can also purchase coverage for their legal spouse.
    • Child - If the employee has coverage for themself, they can also purchase coverage for their legal child(ren).
  • Benefits payable for certain conditions such as: core conditions, cancer conditions, childhood conditions, and other conditions like blindness..
  • Premiums: Premiums for employee coverage and spouse coverage are based on employee's age and coverage amount selected. Child benefit is based only on coverage amount selected. All premiums are payroll deducted.
  • Enrollment: Employees may enroll the month of hire or during the two following months or during the annual open enrollment period.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Carrier: Sun Life

  • Plan Year: July 1 - June 30
  • Coverage Options: Four coverage options are available.

    • Employee Only - employee is the only one covered.
    • Employee + Spouse - employee plus their legal spouse is covered.
    • Employee + Child(ren) - employee plus their legal dependent(s) up to age 26 are covered.
    • Employee + Family - employee plus their legal spouse and legal dependent(s) up to age 26 are covered.
  • Benefits payable for hospital stays due to: sickness, accidents, routine pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, newborn complications, mental and nervous disorders and substance abuse.
  • Premiums: Premiums are based on coverage option selected and are payroll deducted.
  • Enrollment: Employees may enroll the month of hire or during the two following months or during the annual open enrollment period.
