Who Needs Coverage
West Virginia University prioritizes the health, well-being, and success of our students, both inside and outside of the classroom. To ensure that students have access to the quality healthcare when they need it, and to help protect against high, unexpected medical costs, WVU requires most students to carry health insurance.
All domestic
students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours and international students enrolled in at least 1 credit at West Virginia University and WVU Tech (and Potomac State
beginning Fall 2026*), are required to carry health insurance coverage that meets the waiver criteria. This decision was made with great care by our Student Health Advisory Committee.
Eligible students who do not have an approved waiver on file for the academic year
are automatically enrolled in the WVU-sponsored student health insurance
plan (SHIP).
Students should bring a physical copy of their insurance card with you when seeking care at WVU Student Health or any other healthcare provider, as insurance information is required prior to receiving services. Please note that the WVU Student Insurance Office does not share insurance information with healthcare providers, including WVU Student Health.
Note for Potomac State College (PSC) Students: Effective Fall 2026, PSC students are subject to WVU's student health insurance requirement. Domestic students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours and all international students must carry qualifying health insurance. Students who have health insurance that meets the waiver criteria may submit a waiver during the designated waiver period. The Fall 2026 Waiver will open June 1. Students without an approved waiver on file will be automatically enrolled in the WVU Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) administered by Academic HealthPlans.
